ネルソン・マンデラ（1918年～2013年）
南アフリカ共和国の政治家、弁護士。ノーベル平和賞受賞者
1918年7月18日、現在の東ケープ州東部に位置するトランスカイの村の首長の子として生まれる。
大学在学中の1944年、アフリカ民族会議（ANC）に入党。ANCの青年同盟を創設して反アパルトヘイト運動に取り組む。
1952年に弁護士事務所を開業。
1961年、民族の槍という軍事組織を作り司令官に就任。それらの活動により1962年に逮捕。国家反逆罪終身刑となり、ロベン島に収監される。
1989年、当時の大統領フレデリック・デクラークと会談し、翌年に釈放される。
1991年、ANC議長に就任。デクラークと協力して全人種代表が参加する民主南アフリカ会議や多党交渉フォーラムを開催。
1993年、ネルソン・マンデラはデクラークとともにノーベル平和賞を受賞。
1994年に南アフリカ初の全人種参加選挙が実施され、ANCが勝利。ネルソンは大統領に就任し、民族和解・協調を呼びかけ、アパルトヘイト体制下での白人・黒人との対立や格差の是正、黒人間の対立の解消、経済不況からの回復として復興開発計画などを実施した。
1999年に政治の世界から引退。その後、ユネスコ親善大使に就任。
2013年12月5日、ネルソン・マンデラはヨハネスバーグの自宅で95年の生涯を閉じた。
